Prepare for some serious pain when the next title in the popular Mortal Kombat series hits shelves on April 14, 2015, in the form of Mortal Kombat X. It’s pronounced “ex” not “ten,” which makes at least some sense since this is the 22nd installment of the famous fighting game franchise. Developed by NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat X will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It’s expected that another studio will port the game to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.
While most fans of fighting games do not expect major gameplay overhauls in new installments, Mortal Kombat will offer a few more features to distinguish it from its predecessors. This includes the ability to interact with environmental objects which was put to use in NetherRealm’s previous game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. Every fighter will now also have three different fighting-style variations that will allow players to use their favorite characters in new ways. The energy meter, introduced in the previous installment, will make its return, allowing players to perform a variety of more complicated moves.
Mortal Kombat is one of the oldest video game franchises still in production. Released in 1992, Mortal Kombat earned a massive following for its unique characters and gruesome “fatalities,” the point where the winning fighter is allowed one final devastating attack on their opponents. Mortal Kombat was reduced to bankruptcy in 2009 until Warner Brothers purchased the franchise. This will be the second major Mortal Kombat release since then, following 2011’s also confusingly named ninth main title in the series, Mortal Kombat.
Longtime fans of the series will be excited (or disappointed) to learn that Goro, the famous four-armed, 500-year champion of Mortal Kombat, will be available as a pre-order bonus for the game. It was previously expected that he would come as DLC, but will now be free of cost for those inclined to pre-order. Goro appeared in the very first Mortal Kombat as an unplayable boss character and has not been a playable character in the series for eight years.
Mortal Kombat X will also tell a new original and nonlinear story. It will begin shortly after the events of the previous title, before transitioning to a period twenty-five years later. This means we will be seeing older versions of our favorite characters, a bevy of new challengers, as well the children of previous fighters.
Returning “Kombatants” include the famous pair of ninjas, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. New characters revealed at the announcement of the game shortly before E3 earlier this year includes: D’Vorah, a woman who controls insects; Cassie Cage, daughter of Johnny Cage; Sonya Blade; and Kotal Khan, a “blood god” based on Aztec mythology.
