Destiny Available Now After Becoming Most Pre-Ordered New IP Ever

Destiny, the long awaited first-person shooter from the makers of the Halo franchise, was finally released today after setting the record for being the most pre-ordered new IP in video game history. Its developer, Bungie, set another record this summer when Destiny had the biggest beta test of this generation — 4.6 million people tested Destiny last July.
That hands-on strategy seems to have served Bungie well and has translated into positive sales numbers. In May, Ubisoft announced that Watch Dogs had the biggest number of pre-orders for a new IP that year. Watch Dogs also broke the record for biggest first day sales in Ubisoft history, going on to ship 4 million units within its first week, and another 4 million by mid-July.
But Destiny could outpace Watch Dogs in overall sales as well. Activision has spent $500 million on this title, but it looks like that investment will be paying off. According to Cowen Research, Destiny could sell between 10 million and 15 million copies which would equal about $600 million to $900 million. Those kind of numbers would make it the top-selling game of the year. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg thanked fans in a press release yesterday:

Destiny has been a labor of love and a remarkable creative journey for everyone at Activision and Bungie. We feel that we have the opportunity to launch something huge — not just into the gaming landscape, but the pop cultural landscape. Arriving at our launch day with this much support and enthusiasm from fans and retailers is downright exciting. Moments like this just don’t come around very often.

Destiny is an open world first-person shooter that allows players to seek out lost treasures in the last city on Earth as well as on Mars, the Moon and Venus. For those that have not yet upgraded to the next-gen consoles, Bungie has offered a compelling solution. Buying the game digitally on either the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360 will grant players a free pass for the full game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
You can also buy the Destiny Expansion Pass today as well. This will include two expansion packs that will come with new story, coop and multiplayer content, as well as new weapons, gear and armor. Priced at $34.99, the Expansion Pass is essentially a $5 coupon, as the expansions are also available individually for $19.99. The first expansion, “The Dark Below,” is scheduled for a December release with no word yet on when to expect the second pack.
Destiny hits store shelves on September 9, 2014 and will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Have you started playing Destiny yet? And were you one of the many who preordered? Also, are you getting the Expansion Pass? Let us know in the comments!
