Top 10 Low Budget Movies That Were Huge Hits

Hollywood is well known for lavish projects where costs are hardly an impediment. This however does not hold true for all successful films. There are some low budget movies whose success, positive audience feedback and critical acclaim, resonate till date. Here’s a list of Top 10 Low Budget Movies that were Huge Hits. In spite of going really low on the element of financial expenditure, they all made a grand fortune upon release.

Directed by John. G. Avildsen and scripted by Sylvester Stallone, Rocky received a great response from the audience. Starring the fetching and young Stallone, the movie was a light film made within 28 days on a low budget of only $950,000. The movie’s release, in return, fetched mammoth amounts adding up to $225 million. Apart from the financial gains, the movie even won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The Full Monty

This British comedy with a simple story of six unemployed men who try to make a difference in their lives by forming a striptease act proved to be quite surprise hit at the box office. The movie was made on a budget of $3.5 million, but thanks to its hilarious plot and storyline, the movie generated gross revenue of over $250 million. The Full Monty received critical acclaim, after its release and was the highest grossing film in the United Kingdom, until the grandiose Titanic was released.

Directed by James Wan, this $1.2 million low budget horror film was made based on the story of two men who are trapped in a bathroom and then given separate instructions via tape recorders to help them escape. The mind numbing horror and gut wrenching details in the movie received a positive reaction from the audience, allowing Saw to garner returns of over $103 million. The movie then became a franchise with seven equally thrilling parts, which were a hit with the audience too.

Paranormal Activity

Created on a budget of a measly $11,000, this movie created a wave of curiosity with its highly unusual yet gripping plot. The movie was originally created as an independent feature and played at film festival screenings in 2007 and a couple of years later, in 2009, the movie was officially released by Paramount Pictures. Paranormal Activity depicts eerie experiences of a young couple, Katie and Micah, who move into a home in the suburbs. Katie claims to be haunted by the presence of an evil spirit in the house, and to further investigate the disturbing occurrences, Micah and Katie carefully set video cameras all over their home. The happenings that follow are grippingly spooky. The movie is worth every second of viewing and rightfully earned over a whopping $193 million worldwide.

Napoleon Dynamite

Jared Hess had created a short film Peluca that was later adapted into a full-length film called Napoleon Dynamite. The protagonist and title role of Napoleon Dynamite was played by actor Jon Heder, who received a meager sum of $1,000 for his exceptional role in the movie. Later, it is said he renegotiated and was given a profit percentage of the movie. The movie was not just made on a restricted budget of $400,000, but was also filmed in a rather cost-friendly location – producer Jeremy Coon’s apartment! It created a new fondness towards the nerd kind and many movies adopted this leitmotif in their making. Napoleon Dynamite grossed $46,140,956 at the worldwide box office.

Mad Max

This larger than life action film was director George Miller’s debut adventure in filmmaking. The actors risked life and limb with the stunts they had to perform in the action sequences and it is said that Miller could only afford one actual leather suit for the movie, the one worn by Mel Gibson and the rest of the gangsters were costumed in pleather or imitation leather. The movie’s budget was tightly set at $400,000, but the profits it made added up to $100 million. Mad Max even entered the Guinness Book of World records for the film with the highest profit-to-cost percentage.

The Purge

In Purge, writer and director James DeMonaco created the perfect plot for a crime thriller horror film. The budget invested in the making of the movie, which hit theaters in 2013, was a meager $3 million. But the reviews and audiences’ response boosted its revenue to a stupendous $89.3 million! With a story that revolves around the high crime rate in America and the government legally sanctioning criminal activities for 12 whole hours, the terror that strikes thereafter is portrayed in a horrifying real manner in the movie. The enthralling dreadfulness of the plot gripped the attention of the audience and not in a pleasant way either!

Once is the love story of two musicians, a street guitarist and a pianist, who fall in love and create a perfect blend of tunes together. The actors, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, are real musicians and have no prior experience in acting. But the work created by them in the movie is astounding and produced in just $150,000, this one created waves among viewers and critics alike. The movie raked in whopping returns of $20,710,513 and also received an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project is a transfixing horror story of three student filmmakers who mysteriously disappeared in Maryland while on a trip to film a documentary. Their video footage was recovered after a year and the recording is not just eerie but absolutely bloodcurdling! Written and directed by Daniel Myrick, the movie was made on a budget of $60,000. But the massively positive reviews earned the movie its $248 million revenue.

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels

This 1998 British crime comedy gained critical acclaim due to its outstanding hilarious plot. The film is also said to have emerged as the project that made director Guy Ritchie internationally famous. Scripted and directed by Ritchie, the movie tells the story of a heist to rob a smalltime gang. The heist turns comic when the number of gangs, interested in making some easy money by robbing each other, increases. The budget used in the making of the film was $1.35 million, but the revenue it generated worldwide was a phenomenal $28.35 million.
All the movies on this list have gone all out to prove the fact that not every successful movie needs to be created with a monstrous budget, a monumental location or a cast of legendary actors. These Top 10 Low Budget Movies that were Huge Hits were appreciated by viewers and critics alike due to their originality and creativity and the fact that they were epics created with a relatively shoestring budget!

Top 10 Forgettable Early Roles of Popular Celebrities

A brilliant career is built on several well thought out moves and in an industry like Hollywood, where even one wrong move can end a career, this is even more crucial. Yet, a few celebrities exist even in this cutthroat world of movies who have managed to move beyond their initial mistakes.
Here’s a list of celebrities who have made it big in spite of a few forgettable moves at the beginning of their journey.

Jennifer Lawrence

So how often do you have a wonderful personality like Jennifer Lawrence come along to Hollywood? Well, the seemingly perfect story of Lawrence’s rise to fame with works such as Winter’s Bone behind her has another angle. Apart from playing the role of the mascot in Monk, Lawrence also played the character Tiff in Garden Party, a film based on erroneous teens. We are all glad she found her way out of this particular ‘party’!

Sylvester Stallone

If doing bad movies are embarrassing, how would a porn movie look on a resume? Sylvester Stallone, the Rocky Balboa and John Rambo of later years, suffered the misfortune of having to work in a softcore porn movie titled The Party at Kitty and Stud’s. Thanks to the actor’s subsequent popularity in the mainstream, the movie was even re-released as The Italian Stallion and then Bocky! When asked in an interview about it, Stallone replied, “I was starving when I did it… I was desperate… you know when you’re hungry you do a lot of things you wouldn’t ordinarily do!” True.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Phillip Seymour Hoffman had a rather disconcerting start to his film career, playing the role of a high school bully in the teen comedy My Boyfriend’s Back. Even more embarrassing than the role must have been the way his character dies. To give Hoffman due credit, he does look convincing in this role too!

Demi Moore

Before the beautiful Demi Moore went on to become a sex symbol and heartthrob, thanks to her work in movies like Ghost, Indecent Proposal and A Few Good Men, she had to suffer the pangs of a beginner. Among her early moves included playing a part in the movie Parasite, then advertised as “The First Futuristic Monster Movie in 3-D!” A review of the movie went like this: “[To] act in a film like this, all the performer needs to do is lean toward the camera at every opportunity; not much else is required.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Hercules in New York – Arnold has even gone to the extent of publicly disowning this movie. Schwarzenegger’s accent in this comedy-gone-terribly-wrong was so strong (yes, stronger than it is in later movies), that his voice had to be dubbed over. So how much does he hate this movie? He has gone on record saying, “There’s this political battle over [torture technique] waterboarding at places like Guantanamo Bay. I think they [interrogators] should just say, ‘Hey, if you guys don’t talk, you’ll have to see Hercules in New York. I guarantee those guys would talk much faster with that treatment“.

Nicole Kidman

BMX Bandits was Nicole Kidman’s first claim to fame and after winning the role from more than 200 other actresses vying for it, Kidman had to even train on a BMX! Well, the actress who would later star in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut among other hits did have a stunt double for her actual stunts of course. Anyways, this movie launched Kidman into several other Australian productions before the actress finally getting her foot into Hollywood.

Way before the “Material Girl” found success and fame, she accepted a payment of $100 to play a role in the movie A Certain Sacrifice. The movie revolved around streetwalkers and evil rituals and at one point, Madonna tried to ban the movie from release, even dragging the director to court.

Jim Carrey

A musical was Jim Carrey’s first work on the big screen. Impressive? Hardly. Though the movie is still regarded as a cult classic by some, Earth Girls are Easy has Carrey playing the role of an alien named Wiploc, and is quite a mediocre one. The movie does have the ravishing Geena Davis playing the main protagonist and even the sight of her beautiful face does little to save the movie. To do justice to Carrey though, the Liar Liar funnyman is hilarious even then.

Jack Nicholson

The Cry Baby Killer was Jack Nicholson’s first movie on the big screen and even then, one could see the intensity and conviction with which the actor played out his character. Several other forgettable works followed this one and Nicholson strode through it all, finally finding success in 1969 with Easy Rider.

Clint Eastwood

Weighing The Good the Bad and the Ugly against Clint Eastwood’s first movie Revenge of the Creature would be nothing short of blasphemy. Portraying the role of a lab assistant, Eastwood plays a minor unaccredited role in this movie, though his trademark squinting can be seen even then. Yet another forgettable beginning to an otherwise brilliant career, though there are fans who label the movie a 50s classic!
The names on this list may be impressive, though the projects mentioned certainly aren’t. Yet, these celebrities found their way out and grabbed the limelight. Kudos to that!

The profits he made during his career came from sitcoms as well as ad campaigns for various well-known brands like Coca-Cola, Kodak, White Owl Cigars, Jell-O pudding and many more. This celebrity may be sliding down the popularity charts due to the recent sexual assault allegations being leveled against him, but his total net worth, valued at $350 million, remains untouched.

Want Some Sylvester Stallone Memorabilia?

If you’re a Sylvester Stallone fan and love the Rocky and Rambo series, here’s your chance to grab some of the stuff that defined the hit movie franchises – and it’s all being auctioned off by Stallone himself!
Come October 14th and 15th later this year, fans will have the opportunity to get their hands on several iconic pieces of movie history from Stallone’s own collection, including his shorts, robe and even gloves from the Rocky franchise as well as his legendary Army knife and jacket from Rambo !

If you think these are the only props up for auction, Stallone promises the numbers will eventually add up to hundreds, even including bigger items like his Harley Davidson motorcycle in Rocky!
Gathering props over a career that has lasted more than four decades has been a passion for the 69-year old acting veteran and we all know just how legendary his status has been as Rocky Balboa and John Rambo.

The chance to pick up stuff from his personal collection is a great opportunity for many fans! As for any speculation that the auction is being conducted because Stallone is ending his days with the franchises, the hero of old says there’s nothing even remotely connected to retirement on the horizon just yet.
He has a simple explanation for this as well. Telling us how the fascination with superheroes has eaten into the popularity of the portrayal of raw courage in simple human beings, Stallone says he will continue to showcase this side of heroism as long as he can.
“That’s kind of why I’m still around, because I embrace that and it’s become kind of a rarity and there’s not many of us left. Will that come around again? I don’t think so. Not in its purest form. So I embrace it and that’s why I want to continue to do it until my body explodes,” says Stallone.
So if it wasn’t the thought of wrapping up his franchises, what was on Stallone’s mind when he thought of the auction?
“I saw the John Wayne auction and I thought it would have been so much more effective if John Wayne had still been alive so he could explain to his fans what some of his pieces meant to him. I’m not that young, but still aware enough to appreciate the people that will appreciate owning [the items],” says Stallone.
Well, we can only hope heroes like you stay around forever Mr. Stallone and for now, we’ll simply try and grab pieces of history that speak of your grueling times in front of the cameras. Because we all know that there has been nothing less than your own sweat and blood that has gone into each of your Rocky and Rambo movies!

Creed Trailer Is As Powerful As Rocky Balboa’s Punch

The trailer for the Rocky franchise spinoff Creed is here and it sure looks like a powerful movie that’s on its way to stun the audience – maybe as powerful as one of the installments of the franchise itself. This one sure looks like it belongs to Michael B. Jordan’s although things would have certainly been incomplete and wayward without Sylvester Stallone playing the iconic Rocky Balboa.
Few things out there are as powerful as Rocky’s fist coming down on an opponent’s face, so when you think of a spinoff, you know a great storyline and a great lineup of actors it simply won’t suffice. The complete package would have to be one that is wrapped in equal doses of nostalgia and the raw hunger to beat all odds and the Creed trailer tells you it’s got all those ingredients.

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema get together on this one and Ryan Coogler, who has also worked with Jordan in Fruitvale Station, heads this ship as director and teams up with Aaron Covington on the screenplay too.

Apart from Jordan and Stallone, the other stars in the movie include Tessa Thompson of Selma fame playing Jordan’s love interest Bianca, Phylicia Rashad of Steel Magnolias fame playing Mary Anne Creed, the widow of Apollo Creed and Anthony Bellew, the former ABA Heavyweight Champion playing the villainous opponent in the film, “Pretty” Ricky Conlan.

The entire trailer seems to concentrate on Apollo Creed’s son Adonis Johnson, and just when one begins to wonder it just might end without Rocky Balboa making an appearance, out of the shadows comes Sylvester Stallone.

Credit is due to Jordan for successfully carrying most of the trailer on his potent shoulders – it also tells you this young actor has the potential to carry the entire film on those broad and powerful shoulders too. Stallone won’t be putting on his gloves for a fight in the ring for this one so the movie will certainly have to carry some amount of external energy to work as a Rocky spinoff. Fortunately, it does look like Jordan is capable of bringing this energy to the screen.

Creed hits theaters on November 25th later this year.

Tourists Score Epic Selfie with Sylvester Stallone

When in Philadelphia, especially if you’re at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you can’t help but run up the stairs like Sylvester Stallone did in Rocky. If you’re a Stallone fan, it’s no less than a debt you have to pay.

Well, that’s what a group of college friends did and guess who they met at the top of the now iconic steps – Sylvester Stallone in the flesh!
When the youngsters ran up the steps, as thousands of the legendary movie star’s fans have done before, they heard the rumbling voice that is music to fans’ ears telling them, “You guys got up here pretty fast. You’re making me look bad.”
Now, we don’t have news on whether Andrew Wright, Jacob Kerstan or Peter Rowe managed to catch their breath when they reached the top or lost it all over again when they saw Stallone but what we do know is that they managed to pocket a souvenir few others can boast of.
The great guy that he is, Stallone agreed to an epic selfie that had him showing his rock solid paw along with a huge smile with his fans beaming away in the background.
Stallone was in town for the filming of the Rocky franchise’s seventh installment Creed, but what a coincidence to be able to catch him at the epic setting!
Congratulations, Andrew, Jacob and Peter. And thank you, Sylvester Stallone, for making their day. You truly are one of a kind.

A PG-13 Expendables was a Huge Mistake Admits Sylvester Stallone, Meets Ex-Rival Arnie at Pacquiao Fight

Sylvester Stallone has agreed that trying to expand the Expendables franchise’s base by landing a PG-13 certificate was a bad idea, and that the next movie, whenever it comes, will surely be an R-rated one.
“Absolutely unequivocally yes. I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone’s part in trying to reach for a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I’m quite certain it won’t happen again,” said Stallone. Though the next Expendables movie is nowhere on the horizon, the relative success of the last ones are sure to give birth to another one at least and Stallone has plans for it already. Along with the possibility of killing off a major character, the hunky star is toying with the idea of trying out a very different situation and background too. “I have actually entertained the idea of putting the group into an unnatural environment that it, in and of itself, creates extra suspense and tension: the ‘fish out of water’ scenario. That environment might not be time travel, but nearly just as jarring,” Stallone said.
The Rocky franchise star spoke about the possibility of a major star in the cast meeting an end in the next movie too saying, “In an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theater after seeing the film. But that may change in Expendables 4.”
Stallone, in spite of his age, has been rocking the action movie genre with his works. The Rocky spinoff Creed is in the works too and clearly, the actor is in no mood to retire. Arnold Schwarzenegger is yet another action hero from the same generation that doesn’t believe in stopping, even teaming up with his ex-rival in the Expendables franchise. Recently, both the heavyweights of Hollywood were caught catching up on old times at the Manny Pacquiao fight, where the 35-year old defied his age to beat the 30-year old Chris Algieri by a unanimous decision.
Both Stallone and Schwarzenegger spoke about the time when they were at the peak of their careers, and rivals to boot! “We hated each other in the eighties because we were both in the same business, we wanted to outdo each other. It was all out war. It was a competition of who has the most muscles, who kills the most people on screen, who kills in the most unique way, who makes the most money at the box office,” admitted Arnie.
So how did the patching up begin? “Finally, in the nineties, we became kind of friends, and ever since then we have been friends. Initially, you need a competitor, someone that you hate… because that’s what drives me. We were mature enough and smart enough to say this that ‘Let’s stop this,’ and then we started doing movies together and have had a great time working together.”
Well, here’s to two of the best action heroes Hollywood has seen. They’ve given us decades of action, and the way things are going, there’s surely more to come!

Boxer Tony Bellew To Feature In Creed

British professional boxer Tony Bellew is just celebrating a winning bout against Nathan Cleverly and already, the 31-year old is looking for his next one, this time, with Sylvester Stallone by his side. The next challenge Bellew has accepted isn’t a professional fight though. It’s a role in the Rocky spinoff, Creed. The movie will also star ace boxer Andre Ward and Michael B. Jordan of The Wire fame.
Bellew broke the news after a split-second decision gave him a win over Cleverly on 22 November. “I’m going to Hollywood on December 4 for an assignment,” he said. “I’ve been sought after a long time. I hope it’s a speaking part because no one wants to look at this face if I’m not talking. My life’s going to change.” Bellew then went on to talk about the contracts and other details, divulging only the bare minimum. “I’ve had contracts sitting in front of me for weeks because I wasn’t signing them. if this fight had gone wrong I wasn’t signing, I was going home depressed. I can’t go into details but let’s just say it’s big. It will be 40-odd days of filming, I just hope I can do it,” he said.

While Michael B. Jordan will portray Apollo Creed’s grandson in the movie alongside his grandfather’s friend Rocky, boxing fans will have eyes strictly for Bellew and Ward. Sylvester Stallone had spoken of the spinoff before, saying how this wasn’t another Rocky at all. “It’s very interesting because people would think it would be Rocky VII… it’s not, I have a supporting role… I think it will be a great movie,” Stallone had revealed. The movie is set to be directed by Ryan Coogler and filming for the boxing gala will begin in Philadelphia, in January next year.
No split decisions for Bellew this time as the boxer goes for the knockout punch in Hollywood! With Sylvester Stallone, Andre Ward and Michael B. Jordan making up the rest of the cast, Creed is sure to bring back all the Rocky fans to theaters!

The Expendables 3 - Movies

The Expendables 3 – Trailer

“How hard can it be to kill ten men?” asks a villain in The Expendables 3. If the ten men are the wise-cracking veteran mercenaries of The Expendables franchise, it’s probably impossible, but fans will enjoy seeing the villains try.

Sylvester Stallone returns to star as Barney Ross in this sequel to the fan favorite 2010 and 2012 pictures, this time leading his team in a fast-paced caper as he battles arms dealing super-villan Conrad Stonebacks (Mel Gibson, Braveheart) — a former co-founder of the Expendables team. Barney wants to kill the death-dealing and ruthless Stonebanks before Stonebanks succeeds in his mission to destroy the Expendables team once and for all. Barney is joined by a cast boasting enough stars to headline a summer full of movies as he enlists teammates Lee Christmas (Jason Statham, The Transporter), Yin Yang (Jet Li, Badges of Fury), Galgo (Antonio Bandaras, The Mask of Zorro), Doc (Wesley Snipes, Blade), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren, The Expendables 2), Max Drummer (Harrison Ford, The Fugitive), and Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Terminator). In addition to Expendables veterans, he brings in a variety of younger, faster members to add new blood to his old school team: Luna (Mixed Martial Arts fighter Ronda Rousey), Smilee (Kellan Lutz, The Legend of Hercules), Mars (Victor Ortiz from TV’s Dancing With the Stars) and other fresh faces to support the veteran cast of eighties action heroes.

The movie maintains the irreverent tone of the originals while providing a new crop of tightly-sequenced, high voltage action as it careens towards an ultimate face-off between Stonebanks and Ross. As well as starring, Stallone also grabs the screenwriter credit along with co-writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, the team behind thriller Olympus Has Fallen. Patrick Hughes (Red Hill, Signs) directs the Lionsgate film.

The Expendables 3 debuts August 15, 2014, and runs 127 minutes.
