Greece: Ten Things To Know Before You Go

Greece is a beautiful city located in the southeastern Europe. It has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and is the world’s 11th longest coastline. It’s good news for hikers that 80% of Greece is mountainous, of which Mount Olympus is the highest. The cultural and technological achievements of Greece have greatly influenced the world. Incredibly true, visiting Greece is like going to Disneyland for the first time! It’s beautiful, magical, and romantic with great places to visit with tasty cuisines and much more.
Before you pack your bags for Greece, it’s important to know a few helpful facts. These 10 things will make your first trip enjoyable and easy.

  1. Packing

What you take along with you is really important. Just be basic. Some of the essentials you should carry are:

  • Light clothing
  • Walking shoes
  • Tickets
  • Passport
  • Copy of your visa (if applicable)
  • Enough cash / debit cards
  • Medicine
  • Sunglasses
  • Contact lenses (if your vision requires).

Note that your clothing will vary depending on what time of the year you plan to travel. The climate of Greece is primarily Mediterranean that features mild, wet winters, and hot, dry summers.

  1. Layovers

It’s good to keep in mind that there is no traveling with layovers. So, ensure that you have got all the things sorted out for a short and long layover at the airport. If you are traveling with children, make sure that you carry their toys or portable games. However, you as an adult can equally enjoy your time as shopping at the airport is one of the activities you can look out for.

  1. Keep Track of The Flight Delays

Keep a eye on your flight, which gate you should board at, and several other details. Though delays in flights and fluctuations of flight timings have become a routine in most countries, various airlines provide you with alternatives as well. Make sure you explore about these alternatives sooner rather the later.

  1. Pay With Cash

Payment is one very important thing to keep in mind for a safe and happy trip. First it’s important to know which currency in being used in Greece, which is Euros. Hotels will usually accept credit/debit cards, but most other places may not. Thus, keep some cash on hand. If you don’t feel comfortable with keeping cash on you while traveling, go to the nearest ATM machine to withdraw cash in Greece. It will appear on your bank statement as the US Dollar equivalent of your Euro withdrawals – just be careful of extra service charges when you do so.

  1. Hotel Rooms

The hotel rooms are much smaller when compared to the rooms in the U.S. This is because every country has its own culture and living style. Greece share a great pride when it comes charm, uniqueness, and cleanliness.

  1. Bathrooms

99% of the bathrooms here don’t allow the flushing of toilet paper. So the main hassle is to learn what and how to flush. One reason to explain this issue is that Greece is an old, old country, and their sewage and septic systems are highly challenged.

  1. Churches and Beaches

It’s usually a good idea to dress somewhat conservatively if you’re planning on visiting churches and chapels. On the other hand, going to the beach is a totally different story. The majority of people, including females, usually go topless as clothing is optional at the beach. So bring your sunblock, but don’t forget to bring beach shoes because the beach is not sandy so that means you can definitely pick up some pebbles as a souvenir.

  1. Animal Population

In Greece, you’ll find plenty of street cats and dogs. But not to worry, they’ll be taken care of by the Local Dog Refuge and other similar organizations.

  1. Smoking

At least 65% of Greece’s population smokes. If you’re a smoker, you will have almost every place to smoke and still enjoy the beauty of Greece.

  1. And finally…

One thing you aren’t supposed to worry about is food. You’ll get a great combination of breads, salads, and dips.
So, what are you waiting? Pack your bags and make Greece your next destination to visit and spend some quality time with your loved ones!

Colombia beats Greece 3-0

The Colombians came out strong as Pablo Armero scored the team’s first within the first 5 minutes of the match.

Teófilo Gutiérrez scored goal number 2 in the 58th minute following a corner and Colombia continued to press well into injury time as James Rodríguez scored their third to put their final stamp on the match.

Costa Rica upsets Uruguay 3-1

After a penalty kick put Uruguay up in the first half, Costa Rica put on a show in the second.

Joel Campbell played a great match and was rewarded with a goal utilizing a solid strike with his left foot in the 54th minute.

Oscar Duarte was able to head in another goal only 3 minutes later off a free kick.

Marcos Urena added the last Costa Rican goal by slipping the ball by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera in the 84th minute.

England falls to Italy 2-1

It was Italy who struck first. Claudio Marchisio scored 35 minutes in with a long and low strike that got through defenders and ultimately past goalkeeper, Joe Hart.

This seemed to electrify the English side as Wayne Rooney took a pass for a counter-attack and crossed a ball in from the left to a wide open Daniel Sturridge to tap in the equalizer just 2 minutes later.

Mario Balotelli got the game winner on his first World Cup goal in the 50th minute by heading in a wonderful cross by Antonio Candreva.

Côte d’Ivoire comes back to beat Japan 2-1

Japan took an early lead, 16 minutes into the match, with a great left-footed strike by Keisuke Honda into the top left corner.

They seemed to have everything under control until Didier Drogba entered that match shortly after the hour mark.

Drogba’s presence helped lift the spirit of his team immediately.

Wilfried Bony tied the game in the 64th minute and Gervinho secured the lead for good just minutes after.

Buenos Aires is simply a bundle of multiple romantic experiences. Visiting it during spring will allow you to see fields of blooming flowers coupled with milder temperatures and fewer tourists.

Bruges, Belgium

Last but certainly not the least, Bruges in Belgium rounds out this list with its medieval charm equivalent to taking a step back in time to Western Europe. Bruges is a true treasure of Belgium and seems to have come straight out of a fantasy. There are boat rides to be taken in scenic canals, paths to take a romantic walk on or historical landmarks to be visited. Bruges is simply a gem.

Parkour on Showcase in Santorini

The beautiful and mesmerizing Greek island of Santorini, usually a tranquil setting for a perfect holiday, came alive with gravity defying moves, thanks to the Red Bull Art of Motion event. An international freerunning competition, the setting for this year’s event couldn’t be a better one. The beautiful whitewashed facades of Santorini with its unique architecture seemed to be designed and built only for freerunners to display their amazing talents, and the best freerunners from around the world sure made the most of it too!
The rooftops, the stairways, the terraces, balconies, and every single element of the gorgeous façade of Santorini is a sight to behold. Added to this stunning environment was the element of adventure – a combination that made the weekend a delightful affair, for spectators as well as participants. While October 1 and 2 consisted of free freerunning sessions, attracting fans of the sport to view professionals of the art in action, the main event was packed into one day, Saturday. Onsite qualifiers held over the previous days helped decide the lineup for the finals and even while the athletes practiced their moves, fans and spectators knew they were in for a special treat on the big day.
Stunning jumps across seemingly impossible distances, drops from heights that would otherwise seem like a bone breaking one, and spins and twists across obstacles that brought the island alive with cheers were all part of the day as the competition reached a feverish pitch. At the end of it all, every freerunner entertaining the audience gave it their all, pushing their skills to the limit.
Three heats of six freerunners, with the best two from each heat, had decided the finalists and on Saturday, each of them proved why they made it through. Alexander Baiturin from Russia, Pavel Petkuns from Latvia, Yoann Leroux from France and Jesse Peveril from Switzerland were impressive with their moves. Yet, it was local Greek hero Dimitris Kyrsanidis who managed to steal the show from all of them, rightfully taking the top spot with 494 points to his credit. Luci Romberg ruled the women’s section, showing how girls can create magic in the world of freerunning too!

2014 FIBA World Cup – Group B Preview

The tournament begins on August 30th and will conclude with the final match played on September 14th. Focus now shifts to each team’s performance in the group stage to see who will be going home early, and who will stay to play it out in the knockout round.

Group B is comprised of Argentina, Greece, Croatia, Senegal, Philippines and Puerto Rico. Matches are scheduled to take place in Seville at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes San Pablo. The Philippines have been pinpointed as the group’s underdogs, and though they have been absent from this competition for thirty-six years, they now have a young formidable squad that may shock some teams.

The squad from Senegal is pegged as the team most likely to exit at group stage due to the fact that they will be missing the services of some of their key players who are nursing injuries. Mouhamed Sene who has been a strong and dedicated member of this team will be out of action as he has not yet recovered from an injury he picked up recently. Greece is a team that could spoil the party for both the Philippines and Croatia, but they do come into the competition as a wild card while also coming off a poor showing at the 2013 EuroBasket.

Among the key stars and talent to watch in Group B are Luis Scola and Pablo Prigioni who both play for Argentina. The Puerto Ricans will need to count on some of their major stars to help them clinch this year’s FIBA World Cup which includes John Holland and Ricardo Sanchez. Group B should provide some of the best action from all the groups at this year’s tournament.

Uruguay - 2014 World Cup

June 19 – Recap

Colombia Wins Again, 2-1 vs. Cote d’Ivoire

Colombia now has two wins in two games, which puts them at the top of Group C with 6 points. Colombia took a 1-0 lead in the second half when James Rodriguez headed home a corner kick by Juan Cuadrado.

Their lead doubled to 2 when a turnover in the midfield led to a Colombian counter-attack. Juan Quintero received a pass and slid the perfect shot under the arm of goalkeeper Boubacar Barry.

The Ivory Coast was able to make a game of it three minutes later. Gervinho put on a brilliant individual effort around multiple defenders to unleash a right-footed shot past David Ospina. Unfortunately, this was as close as they would get.

Uruguay defeats England 2-1

With another loss, England now find themselves in a bit of a pickle in Group D. They’re at the bottom of the group with 0 points.

The story of the day belonged to Luis Suarez, who returned from injury to score both of Uruguay’s goals in the victory. His first came in the 39th minute with a header past Joe Hart. His second, and game-winner, came in the 85th minute thanks in part to some terrible defence by England. A long kick by keeper Fernando Muslera was headed backwards by Steven Gerrard which allowed Suarez, who was behind the defence, to be onside. He was all alone against Hart, and once again, made no mistake.

10 minutes prior to the game winning goal, England’s Wayne Rooney finally netted his first World Cup goal. He had multiple chances to score throughout the match, including one header in the first half hitting hard off the crossbar.

10-Man Italy draws against Japan

Italy’s Costas Katsouranis was sent off in the 38th minute after receiving his second yellow card of the match. Although they played one man down, they did not concede many quality scoring chances for Japan.

Japan may have played a more conservative game, electing not to send more players forward for fear of risking a Greek goal. A loss would have eliminated Japan, but a draw kept them alive.

Costa Rica - 2014 World Cup

June 29 – Recap

Netherlands Win Thriller Against Mexico, 2-1

The Mexican pace was apparent from the onset of the game and it led to the first goal at the 48 minute mark. Giovani dos Santos sent a beautiful shot from long range into the far post for the lead.

The best chances for the Netherlands came from corner kicks, taking a total of 10 for the game versus Mexico’s 2. The game could’ve been tied in the 57th minute from a shot by Stefan de Vrij, but Guillermo Ochoa stopped the shot and it bounced off the post to stay out. The Dutch finally broke through in the 88th minute when a corner kick was headed backwards to an open Wesley Sneijder who rocketed a shot through open space and into the back of the net.

In heartbreaking fashion for the Mexicans, a penalty shot was awarded to the Dutch in the 4th minute of added time where Klaas Jan Huntelaar made no mistake on the kick to put the Netherlands through to the next round.

Costa Rica Survives Against Greece, 1-1 (5-3 Penalty Kicks)

Costa Rica scored first when Bryan Ruiz directed a slow one into the net in the 52nd minute. The shot absolutely fooled defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and keeper Orestis Karnezis who both didn’t move and helplessly watched the ball enter the net.

Costa Rica made things hard on themselves in the 66th minute when Oscar Duarte was sent off. Greece tied the game when Sokratis found a rebound in the 1st minute of added time and bounced it over a diving Keylor Navas. Costa Rica was able to hold off the Greek attack in extra time to send it into penalties.

Out of 9 penalty kicks taken, only one was missed, and it was thanks to this save by Navas:

Costa Rica went on score their final penalty kick, going a perfect 5/5 and winning 5-3 on kicks to advance to the quarterfinals.

Round of 16 - 2014 World Cup

Round of 16 – Preview

The ecstasy of making it through to the next round mixed with the unmistakable feeling of anxiety, if this is what you feel, imagine what the players advancing to the Elimination Round of the 2014 World Cup must be feeling! The best of the best have gotten through and here’s what’s in store over the next few days as the fight for survival only gets tougher!

They made it!

The world’s greatest 32 teams fought tooth and nail over the last few days and while half of them head home, the other half move on to see another day! Take a look at the 8 matches in the next round.

Brazil - 2014 World Cup Chile - 2014 World Cup

Brazil vs. Chile

The host country was always the favorite to advance and they’ll need a win against Chile to continue their march. While Brazil certainly seems to be on a roll on Neymar’s steady shoulders, even topping Group A with two wins and a draw, Chile is certainly not a team that will just roll over.  After all, the Brazilian coach Scolari had singled out Chile’s tremendous potential more than six months ago, even hoping the Chileans do not make it through the group stages!

Standing second in Group B with two wins and one loss, Chile has proved to be the team with the fight. As these two teams wait eagerly to kick-off the Knockout Stage of the World Cup, the world and especially the Brazilians wait to see if the Chile players have it in them to knock out the favorites. Scolari will surely have his fingers crossed and hope that the team he spoke so highly about doesn’t turn around and knock them out of the tournament.

Mexico - 2014 World Cup Netherlands - 2014 World Cup

Netherlands vs. Mexico

The orange brigade versus the green will prove to be not only a visual treat on the pitch, but will also prove to be quite a game! Netherlands has enjoyed an impressive run in the World Cup so far and it seems like there’s no stopping them. Winning all three matches in their group stage, they have run over Chile, the mighty Spaniards and Australia in their quest for glory and now, there is the equally strong team of Mexico standing in their way.

Mexico, with two impressive wins over Croatia and Cameroon and an equally impressive draw against Brazil, is certainly one of the teams on a roll at the 2014 World Cup. They have impressed every football fan with their on-pitch antics and the Dutch will surely be wary of their attacking capabilities. Do they have it in them to stop the mighty Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie and race to the opposite goal at the same time? While the Mexicans lay out their strategy and get to work, all we can do is wait and watch.

Colombia - 2014 World Cup Uruguay - 2014 World Cup

Colombia vs. Uruguay

Three emphatic wins put Colombia at the top of Group C. While a casual look at their fellow group members, Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan might suggest an easy run, the strengths of the other teams haven’t been any less impressive. For Colombia to top the group, it has taken teamwork and consistency in equal measures and as they size up their opponents Uruguay, there’s surely nothing but another win on their minds!

Uruguay has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons, thanks to the otherwise brilliant Suarez falling prey to his now proven instinct of wanting to sink his teeth into his opponents’ flesh. The team will be looking forward to using their anger over Suarez’s ban and channeling it instead towards routing Colombia. It won’t be an easy task, however. After all, they have had to suffer one loss on their way to the elimination rounds, while the Colombians have only handed out defeats to their opponents!

Costa Rica - 2014 World Cup Greece - 2014 World Cup

Costa Rica vs. Greece

Costa Rica has had an inspiring run in the tournament so far and with two wins and one draw under their belt, they find themselves not only at the top of Group D, but also on top of the world for making it out of a group that had stalwarts such as Italy and England. Along with Uruguay, they even managed to send these favorites back home! So while Costa Rica’s amazing time on the pitch is surely enough for a round of celebrations, they cannot overlook their next opponent.

With a win, a draw and a loss to their credit, Greece may not have had an emphatic run in the 2014 World Cup, but then again, that has never been a reason to write off any team. While their entry into the elimination round may have been a shaky one, they just might be able to group together now and plan a strategy that could send Costa Rica packing.

Argentina - 2014 World Cup Switzerland - 2014 World Cup

Argentina vs. Switzerland

Argentina has a former No.10 looking over them from the stands in Maradona while they have their current No.10 on the pitch striking every ball into the net in his quest for the Golden Boot! Three wins over their Group F opponents Nigeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran bring them to the elimination round and while these teams may seem like easy wins on paper, they certainly put up a great fight! Switzerland, however, will prove to be tougher nuts to crack and the fact that they are now finding their stride will prove to be a worry for Messi and gang.

Two wins and a loss see Switzerland moving on to the next stage of the tournament, and their run has been remarkable! For a team that wasn’t really worth mentioning when the tournament began, the Swiss have proved their worth through sheer brilliance on the pitch and they’ll need every bit of it when they take on the mighty Argentinians. Will they attack with their own spearheads or spend most of their resources on the pitch in trying to defend their territory against the mighty warriors from Argentina?

France - 2014 World Cup Nigeria - 2014 World Cup

France vs. Nigeria

Wins against Honduras, a strong Switzerland, and a draw against Ecuador bring France into the next round. One of the few remaining heavyweights in the 2014 World Cup, the French players are certainly not resting on past laurels, a mistake other biggies in the tournament, who are now on their way home, seem to have made. They are fighting it through and if their run at goals is anything to go by, they are certainly going for the kill this time around! The match against Ecuador proved to be the only goalless game, while in the other two Les Blues games featured an impressive eight goals in total. They will definitely look to add to this tally in their fixture against Nigeria, after all, their young lineup has a point to prove!

Nigeria has had a dicey run into the elimination rounds. A win, a loss and a draw brings the Nigerians here and while they surely would be on a high to get out of the group stages, meeting the team from France won’t be a pleasant thought to savor. They will, however, give it their all and if they happen to peak at the right moment, they might just make it through!

Germany 2014 - World Cup Algeria - 2014 World Cup

Germany vs. Algeria

The Germans have topped Group G with 7 points and having beaten the USA in their last match, will be looking to maintain the same momentum going into the elimination round. Two wins and a draw is certainly not a bad record and with Thomas Muller firing his volleys with perfection, the Germans surely have a shot at the Cup. By the way, Muller’s in the race for the Golden Boot too and wins for Germany mean stronger chances for him too! In their way stands Algeria, a team that has an equally strong reason to fight it out.

For the first time, Algeria has advanced to the elimination rounds and this historic development surely has the team as well as fans and countrymen elated! The struggle to progress was of course on until the last minutes of their match against Russia, but they managed to hold a draw and send their opponents packing. So, while a win, a loss and a draw in the group stages may seem like a puny record against Germany’s run, the high spirits and the chance of creating history yet again will boost their morale and determination!

Belgium - 2014 World Cup USA - 2014 World Cup

Belgium vs. USA

Group H may not have had any strong teams to stand tall against the Belgians, but their three wins certainly is cause for celebration. Some say they are the favorite to win the cup too and while this prediction will be put to the test soon, the team is certainly on a high for now! The Belgians’ resounding run in the group stages have given them enough reason to maintain the same momentum, and with this ploy in mind, they will be hoping to rout the USA too!

When USA takes on Belgium, the support in the stands and back home will be overwhelming. The team has enjoyed a tremendous surge of support from its countrymen and the fact that they have advanced will heighten the football fever just a bit more! A win, a loss and a draw is not exactly the best of records, but they are advancing to the next round where anything can happen!
