10 Easy Food Swaps To Keep Your Cholesterol In Check

You want to maintain your cholesterol, but also want to sustain the deliciousness of food? Many people believe that in order to control cholesterol you have to survive on oats, bran, and tofu only. This is absolutely not true. You can maintain your cholesterol without sacrificing taste. Here are some interesting food substitutions which can help you do just that.
1. Sprinkle Walnuts, Skip Croutons

A salad with croutons is tasty, but it carries carbohydrates. For a healthier and tastier salad, replace croutons with walnuts. These powerful nuts contain polyunsaturated fat (good fat) that will maintain your cholesterol.
2. Sip Water, Not Cocktails
One of the delightful moments for foodies is to have mixed drinks with fruits, but they contain carbohydrates that would see your cholesterol levels soar. Switching to just water will not only quench your thirst, it will also keep your blood flowing freely.
3. Say Yes To Nuts, No To Cheese And Crackers

We’re all usually encountered with the problem of pre-dinner hunger. In order to fulfill that need, we mostly look for crackers and cheese, but they carry high saturated fats which may shoot up your cholesterol. Instead, have some almonds. They contain low saturated fats and are a good snack for your pre-dinner hunger!
4. Vinegar And Lemon Juice Beats Salad Dressing
Salads are good for a healthy diet and salad dressing is one of the core ingredients that bring the actual taste to the salad. But if it’s a salad with high-fat dressing, then you’re missing the whole purpose of a salad. Switch to the balsamic vinegar or lemon juice which keeps it healthy without compromising the delicious taste of a salad.
5. Ditch The Butter For Margarine Spread

Butter is one of the highlights of breakfast, however, it’s also a source of high cholesterol. In order to balance taste and your cholesterol, replace it with margarine, which is a better fat that also provides taste.
6. Use Ground Turkey, Not Ground Beef
Red meat contains both saturated fat and dietary cholesterol that will shoot up your cholesterol levels. Switch to ground turkey which is healthy as well as tasty.
7. Chicken Is OK, Scallops Are Better
Chicken is the favorite of many, but it does increase cholesterol levels. If you want to reduce your cholesterol while maintaining the great taste of food, switch to seafood – especially scallops.
8. Quinoa Is A Tasty Alternative To Rice
Rice is no doubt very tasty in many delicious dishes, but it can increase your cholesterol level. So in order to control your cholesterol, use quinoa, the South American seeds which will bring a tasty and healthy touch to your food.
9. Munch On Popcorn, Not Tortilla Chips

Tortilla is known to be delicious as healthy food, but homemade, air-popped popcorn is tastier and even healthier and it will help your cholesterol levels in check. Just watch out for that butter!
10. Skip The Fatty Sour Cream, Choose Fat-Free Greek Yogurt
Sour cream is a good ingredient to be used for garnishing or as past of a sauce. However, it contains saturated fats which will increase cholesterol levels in your body. Swap it out with no-fat Greek yogurt instead so that you can maintain the taste and texture of your food.

Tasty Street Foods From Around The World

Who doesn’t love street snacks? From the US to the streets of Thailand, street food can be some of the the most democratic, tastiest, and safest foods that is made in front of you. Regardless of where you’re heading to, you can get street food while traveling to many different countries.
Does this make you nervous? Some meat is cooked at 1000 degrees that ensures proper roasting of any bacteria that could possibly cause you any problems.
Most of us try to indulge in these low-cost delicacies whenever we get a chance to give a treat to our taste buds. Here are some of the street flavors you should definitely try:

Fried fish on a stick. Four pieces of fish are stacked onto a single skewer just like a fish kebab. It’s delicious, salty, and crispy.

Veggie samosas are perfect for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. These are fried in front of you and are served hot. No doubt about the aroma and savory flavor of these samosas.

Try Bolani. This one is a baked or fried vegan flatbread filled with potatoes, lentils, spinach, and pumpkin. Afghanis are also nut lovers – especially pine nuts. They sell them from huge wheelbarrows by the pounds or baggie.
The Maldives

Short Eats are seen everywhere and are considered ubiquitous for the 4 p.m snack serving. This food is enjoyed by the local Maldivians. Available in different varieties, short eats are stuffed with mince of tuna and super-spicy Maldivian chilies.

The word, Rojak means ‘an awesome mixture’ and it is worth believing that it is really an awesome mixture. It is made by blending egg, meat, pastry, and peanut sauce. All this is bundled up in a plastic bag. Peanut sauce is the ketchup of the Malaysian market. Just try sticking a fork in it.

Covrigi is a hot pretzel. Instead of salt, it is covered with poppy seeds and is sold right on the street. It goes perfect with just water.

Choripan is a perfect mixture of Argentina’s Latin and European cultures. It is a barbecued sausage wrapped in a crusty toasted French bread.

What’s so good about street food is that it is cost effective, freshly prepared, and highly convenient for you if you are not in a mood to prepare food at home. The ambiance may be a busy street with horns honking but the thrill and excitement of eating such yummy and quick food on the street is incomparable to a candle light dinner.

10 Foods To Live Happily, Even With Diabetes

Obsessing over everything you cannot eat or drink when faced with diabetes is something many are familiar with. So why not focus on what you can have instead of focusing on what you can’t?
These foods will help you stay healthy even if you are constantly listening to the phrase, ‘Watch your diet, please!’
1. Beans

These little nuggets are much more than being high in fiber content (the fiber is also based purely on plant compounds that helps you feel fuller, steadies blood sugars, and even helps lower cholesterol. Half a cup of black beans packs more than 6 grams of fiber). Packing a serious kick of calcium, these beans help burn body fat making you healthier in the long run. In a half cup of white beans, you will get around 100 milligrams of calcium providing you with about 10% of the recommended daily intake. Both black and white beans make an outstanding protein source; as they are lower in saturated fats compared to other commonly used sources of proteins (white and red meats).
Cooking suggestions: Add them in salads, soups, and more. With the variety available, you can have them every day in a week without repeating them!
2. Dairy

The best sources for calcium as well as vitamin D are dairy foods such as fresh milk, cheese, and yogurt. Calcium and vitamin D when combined are a hard hitting anti-diabetes combination. A study has found women who consumed around 1,200 milligrams of calcium and around 800 units of vitamin D daily were 34% less prone to diabetes than those who took lower units of both these nutrients. Nothing provides these nutrients like dairy does, but stick to the fat-free versions as it has a lower concentration of saturated fats.
Cooking suggestions: Drink milk instead of sugary juices and sodas. Enjoy small servings of yogurt and cottage cheese instead of your regular snacks and desserts.
3. Salmon

A healthy super food, salmon is recommended by all nutritionists as a must have. The Omega 3 fatty acids are very good for you as this is a type of healthy fat that reduces the risks of various heart diseases, helps fight the weight off at the waist line, and improves insulin uptake – a special benefit for diabetic patients.
Cooking suggestions: Skip the chicken and meat at least once or twice in a week – it simply takes a few spices to rub on and a toss in the oven and it’s done! You can also add canned salmon to omelets and salads.
4. Tuna

Heres another super food – tuna! It has high amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids as well as amazing amounts of vitamin D! Tuna has been recently found to have very high amounts of Mercury which can trigger neurological problems if consumed in high doses. To combat this, limit the weekly intake to 2 ounces as well as buy canned tuna instead of fresh.
Cooking suggestions: Try delicious tuna and vegetable salad sandwiches and grilled fillets for burgers or on rice.
5. Barley

Barley is rich in something very special – a soluble fiber by the name of Beta-Glucan! Beta-Glucan has been known to reduce total cholesterol by targeting LDL specifically and helps steady blood sugar levels and prevents that sugar rush. As with all fibers, barley helps fill you up while preventing you from binge eating and upsetting your sugar balance.
Cooking suggestions: Buy hulled barley which is unrefined as compared to what we can find at super markets – pearl barley. Simply soak the barley overnight, cook, and add to various soups or stews.
6. Oats

Oats are packed full of fiber content! Just half a cup has 4 grams of fiber. Along with stabilizing your bowel movements so unhealthy substances excrete out, it helps in lowering bad and overall cholesterol levels. The soluble fibers in oats help to slow down the break down of carbohydrates making sure that blood sugar levels stay constant.
Cooking suggestions: The easiest way is to cook some and have it for breakfast! Otherwise search for recipes with oats in them, for example, cakes, cookies and even meatloaf!
7. Berries

Yes, that’s right, a sweet fruit! Berries are known as nature’s candy that is loaded with fiber and polyphenols (antioxidants). The antioxidants found in berries have been known to lower blood pressure and increase good cholesterol. So grab a cup of blackberries or blueberries and enjoy the benefits along with the sweet taste we so crave!
Cooking suggestions: They taste amazing on their own and are also delicious when mixed into oatmeal, salads, or ice creams. You can also freeze fresh berries so you always have some to pop in when you feel the need for something sweet.
8. Lentils

Just like the beans mentioned, lentils are also loaded with good fiber (a cup holds 16 grams)! One cup also gives around 360 mcg folate. They are a very good source of proteins if you do not fancy meat and also are loaded with many minerals and vitamins.
Cooking suggestions: They can be added to soups or pastas or just kept as an appetizer or side dish. If you are feeling exotic, hit up a recipe for the famous Indian dish Tadka Daal and enjoy it with chilies and garlic!
9. Flaxseed

Very tiny in size, but we know the health punch associated with them is huge! A great source of fiber and ALA (alpha linolenic acid), it helps in the production of Omega 3 EPA as well as DHA. Increased ALA levels, during studies, have resulted in lower chances of heart diseases, heart attacks and other related issues. Flaxseed also helps to lower blood sugar and cholesterol.
Cooking suggestions: Grind them and include with oat meal and/or smoothies.
10. Walnuts

Have about an ounce of these nuts daily and enrich your body with 2.6 grams of ALA and 2 grams of fiber. However, make sure you watch your calories if you are on a diet because an ounce of walnuts packs 185 of them!
Cooking suggestions: Have them as a standalone snack! Or, you can add them to your salads and cookies or brownies for an added crunch.

Food Ingredients That Might Be Ruining Your Mood

Food, a necessity of life, surely has an impact on your waistline. But do you know how this daily requirement can change the way you think, feel, and act? Have you ever wondered that it may be something you are eating that is creating mood swings? There are many foods or food additives that can disrupt your nervous system, making you feel exhausted, irked, or even sometimes anxious. Even a very small amount of such ingredients can leave us feeling low and depressed. Check out these seven food ingredients which might be ruining your mood.
1. White Flour

So, we all are aware of the fact that white flour isn’t healthy. Likewise, just avoiding white bread is not sufficient in keeping you away from consuming white flour. Bleached white flour is being commonly used in other foods such as salads and soups, and even as a thickening agent. With no nutritional values attached to it, it stimulates blood to make high glucose content in our body whenever eaten. This causes your mood to swing considerably and makes you petulant with hunger.
2. Food Dye FD&C Red 40

This dye is used in almost everything like soft drinks, fruit juices, energy drinks, cereals, and even in some medicines. It’s the most commonly used dye in foods that sadly gives nothing but color; tricking you into believing that it’s tastier. Studies have demonstrated that this ingredient can cause hypersensitivity in both children and adults.
3. Hydrogenated Oils

These oils are used as preservatives to extend shelf life by not just days, but months. These highly processed oils create the unhealthiest form of fat known as trans fat. Our digestive system has to work twice as hard to simply digest these fats causing cholesterol levels in the blood to shoot up. Moreover, it has been proven that the consumption of hydrogenated oils leads to weight gain. Consuming these additives make you moody and create an illusion fog in the brain.
4. Aspartame

Less sugar in-take is good for health, but not at the cost of jeopardizing your life. Almost all sugar-free products you see in supermarkets include aspartame as an artificial sweetening ingredient. It’s one of the toxic chemicals that have been associated with headaches, weight gain, and seizures which is why you should minimize or avoid its intake at all costs.
5.Food Dye FD&C Yellow 5

This is yet another common and extremely dangerous dye used in food. It can be found in foods and drinks that have unnatural bright color to it. Mostly it is used in soft drinks, chewing gums, breads, cereals, and biscuits. It’s proven to cause severe health problems like asthma, nausea, and even mood disorders.
6. Monosodium Glutamate
MSG is a chemical that is again used as a preservative to increase shelf life for months. It’s also used to improve the flavor in pre-packaged foods like potato chips, frozen meals, nuts, and soups. Even a small amount of its consumption leads to dizziness, nausea, weakness, and anxiety.
7. Sugar

Sugar is that one ingredient which is found in almost every thing. You just have to name the product and sugar will be surely there. It can be given a different name such as sucrose, lactose, dextrose, and fructose, to disguise its presence and trick you into buying it. Consuming foods that include high-sugar content can lead to drastic health problems such as diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, depression, and not to forget the most common: obesity! If your sweet tooth really cannot resist sugary foods, then start off with consuming brown sugar as it’s a lot better than white sugar. In addition, aim for only 12 spoonfuls of sugar a day.
