Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) won Stage 5 of the Tour of Beijing on Tuesday in a high-speed sprint to the finish. Modolo was a part of the peloton that caught up to the day’s leading pair of Laurent Mangel (FDJ.fr) and Tosh Van der Sande (Lotto Belisol) with less than a kilometer to go.
The sprinters kicked it up a notch with 500m to go while exhaustion started to set in on Mangel and Van der Sande. Greg Henderson (Lotto Belisol) came a close second while Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Sky) rounded out the Top 3.
The race saw the overall lead stay with Philippe Gilbert of BMC Racing on the final day. Gilbert finished the race three seconds ahead of stage four winner Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) and nine seconds ahead of Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge).
The finish marks the end of the 2014 UCI WorldTour and also the end of the Tour of Beijing as UCI President Brian Cookson decided not to continue with the event.
