FIBA Recap – September 9

The first day of quarter-final action saw Lithuania take on Turkey and Slovenia facing the United States.
Lithuania defeated Turkey, 73-61, to advance to the semi-finals thanks in part to Jonas Valanciunas’ double-double performance of 12 points, 13 rebounds with 1 assist and 1 block. Lithuania’s three-point shooting was red hot all game, hitting 53% of their threes compared to Turkey’s dismal 17% rate. Turkey held Lithuania to only 13 points in the first quarter for an early lead, but Lithuania took control of the game in the second quarter and never looked back.
The Americans had little trouble disposing of their opponents, winning by a margin of 43 points. The final score ended up being a 119-76 blowout, with 6 players reaching double digit scoring for USA. Klay Thompson led all scorers with 20 points while also contributing 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block.
The victories set up a semi-final matchup between Lithuania and USA on Thursday, September 11th.
