Extraordinary was the term used by ESPN announcer Ian Darke after watching the replay of the goal. At first glance, it would seem that the shot by West Ham and Ecuador star Enner Valencia took a wicked deflection to fool USMNT goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
Upon further inspection, you will notice that the strike never touched U.S. defender Tim Ream. The ball looks like it’s about to go one way, but then completely changes direction mid-flight to catch Guzan flat-footed and helpless to stop the ball.
It was kinda like wiffle ball.
The goal came in the 88th minute to tie the game at 1-1 until the final whistle blew. As the game came to an end, so too did Landon Donovan’s 15-year international career.
