Avalanche Kills Two Junior U.S. Ski Team Athletes

On Monday, January 5th, an avalanche in Austria took the lives of two junior US Ski Team athletes. The two were part of a group of six who were freeskiing in the area.

The US Ski and Snowboard Association revealed that the two prospects from their development team, Ronnie Berlack, 20, and Bryce Astle, 19, died while the other four were able to make it out safely. The incident occurred near the Rettenbach glacier in the mountains over Soelden, the US alpine ski team’s European training base since 2011.

A moment of silence was held in Zagreb, Croatia, before the start of the FIS World Cup men’s slalom event on Tuesday.
