Portugal fans were definitely disappointed to see their team fall 4-0 to start their World Cup campaign. For German fans, though, what they saw was nothing short of a brilliant performance defensively and offensively.
Things started out poorly for Portugal as Joao Pereira received a yellow card in the penalty area only 11 minutes in. Thomas Muller scored on the ensuing penalty kick to get things rolling for Germany. Mats Hummels made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute.
It only got worse for Portugal when Pepe was sent off with a red card for a headbutt on Muller. Pepe’s temper certainly got the best of him and this just made things harder for Portugal.
Muller added his second of the match after a poor clearing attempt by Portugal with just minutes to go in the first half. He completed his hat-trick in the 78th minute of the second half.
Only four teams have failed to score at the World Cup so far: Greece, Honduras, Cameroon, and now Portugal.
