When you think spy about movies like James Bond franchise or the Bourne series, you know you’ll get it all – loads of action and drama with just the right undertones of romance, or at least unhealthy flirting! Going by what we are used to, it sure looks like Kingsman: The Secret Service is holding back on the romance bit. Well, at least the trailer looks like it does! Coming from the famed director of Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, Matthew Vaughn, one can expect the unexpected, and this movie seems to be all that, and more!
The trailer moves fast and in random glimpses, gives us the storyline of the movie. Samuel L. Jackson plays the “diabolical genius” while Colin Firth will don an action role this time around to take on the villainous Valentine and his evil plans. Of course, Firth and his team have to beat the skills of Valentine’s henchwoman Gazelle, played by Sofia Boutella, too. So in comes a young man, who by the looks of him, certainly doesn’t fit into the Kingsman tribe. While the latter’s agents are known for their oh-so-very English attires and behavior, Eggsy, played by Taron Egerton, seems quite the opposite, offering an interesting element to the movie. So we don’t really have a sophisticated field agent taking over the reins of a case here, but a complete amateur learning the ropes and getting to the task, all in one movie! Well it sure looks like Eggsy learns quite fast, considering the action he gets into later in the movie. He seems quite committed too, even refusing a locked up damsel in distress help of any kind, all because he’s “gotta save the world”! Now that’s whom we need when we think of a field recruit sticking to his job!
Samuel L. Jackson plays out the villainous attitude on a low, though somewhat twisted key, in spite of his evil plans consisting of biological weapons and more! The sequences created, thanks to the villainous moves of his character though, are anything but low key in any way. The action is thrilling all the way and some scenes in the movie seem like they would give the other, more serious, spy movies a run for their money! Michael Caine heads the assault, albeit from his posh British office, while his agents, including the troubled newcomer Eggsy taking the action to the field.
This conversation between Jackson and Firth sort of rounds up the movie for you – “You like spy movies? When I was a kid that was my dream job. Gentleman spy,” says the villainous Jackson with Firth replying, “Nowadays they are a little serious for my taste. Give me a far-fetched theatrical plot any day.” Well, the trailer of Kingsman: The Secret Service sure leads us to believe that the movie is based on a far-fetched plot, and a great one at that! Based on Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ comic series, the movie will hit theaters towards the end of January next year.
