Scandal star and new mom, Kerry Washington, told Yahoo Beauty Editor-In-Chief, Bobbi Brown, that not only did she and Jennifer Lopez grow up together in the Bronx, going to the same Boys & Girls Club, but that a young J Lo taught her some dance moves.
The Django Unchained star is quoted as saying: “You wouldn’t know it from my build, but Jennifer taught me how to dance. We had this amazing dance teacher, Larry, and Jennifer actually used to substitute teach when Larry wasn’t around.”
She added: “And I remember when she left the Boys [and Girls] Club because she was leaving New York to go to LA to try and make it big and we were all like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ ”
The 37-year-old actress says she was able to use that training in one of her first big movies, Save The Last Dance, released in 2001, which showcased a number of dance styles including a fusion of hip-hop and ballet.
In her current acting job in the hit ABC series, which is now in its fourth season, Washington’s character, Olivia Pope, doesn’t require dance steps. In fact, the only move she tends to make is bringing a glass of red wine to her lips. The actress differs from her character in that respect, saying: “I don’t (drink red wine in real life!) On the show it’s just grape juice, because I would never be able to memorize all my lines.”
Lopez isn’t the only A-lister in Washington’s past. She talked about another celebrity she grew up with in a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, explaining: “I was in an acapella group in high school. It was a nine-girl acappella singing group, we called ourselves Triple Trio. And when I was in junior high school I really wanted to be in Triple Trio because there was this really amazing senior named Gwyneth Paltrow and she was president of Triple Trio. So I really wanted to be president of Triple Trio one day. And then I was co-president of Triple Trio one day. My shining honor!”
The new mother has a new shining honor in her life these days with husband Nnamdi Asomugha, and her name is Isabelle, their six-month-old baby. Washington told Yahoo! that motherhood “…is amazing and life changing and extraordinary. I normally don’t talk about this stuff… I think I am just in awe of her.”
Explaining that she used Pilates to get back into shape, she added: “It’s such a great way to get in shape in a loving way. I feel like I’m both challenging myself and healing my body at the same time.”

When asked about how she’s handling having a hit show and being a new mom, the Ray star, who was included in this year’s Time magazine’s list of 100 “Most Influential People in the World,” says: “I tend to think about those moments on the red carpet as being a character called the ”red carpet Kerry” I try to step into that. I don’t mean deny the fear – I don’t deny my feelings on a bad day – but I kind of try to invite myself to shift into something else to pull it together. You don’t have to handle things alone, you can reach out and get help from close friends and family.”
